This guide is written for stylists, salon owners, and wholesale clients who specify extension orders. Weight is a starting variable — not the definition of the service. Used incorrectly, gram charts create overloaded natural hair, visible wefts, bond stress, and client dissatisfaction.

Hair extension pricing should never be calculated only by grams. The client's natural hair density, current haircut, target length, application method, strand weight, placement strategy and labour time all affect the final result and the true cost of the service.

Why grams alone fail

Hair density — fine hair tolerates less weight; coarse hair may need more spread, not more bulk at one row.
Current haircut — layers, blunt lines, and short perimeter affect blend strategy.
Target length — longer extensions increase leverage on the natural hair anchor points.
Method — tape distributes differently from keratin strands or sew-in wefts.
Strand weight — keratin tips are planned per bond, not only per pack gram total.
Placement strategy — row depth and spacing determine comfort and visibility.
Labour time — complex plans require more consultation, installation, and finishing.

General ranges by install type

Partial volume (temples & crown) — often 50–80 g depending on method and desired lift.
Medium full-head — commonly 100–150 g for average density, adjusted for coarse or fine hair.
Full transformation — frequently 150–200+ g when adding significant length and density; fine hair may need staged installs.
Clip-In sets — typically 80–120 g total across pieces, cut to suit layers.

Method-specific notes

Tape-In Hair Extensions

Weight distributes across multiple wefts and row depths. Specify pack counts with row plans — 2 cm butterfly, 3 cm classic, and 4 cm regular widths change sectioning math.

Keratin Tip Hair Extensions

Strand counts and bond spacing define the install. Fine hair needs micro logic; short-hair transformations are custom projects, not gram-table lookups.

Weft Hair Extensions

Short hair transformation complexity

When natural hair is short and the target is long, weight must be introduced gradually with blend zones and often multi-visit structure. Ordering maximum grams for a single session on fine short hair is a common failure pattern.
