Hair extension weight guide
Extension weight affects comfort, blend quality, and the long-term health of a client's natural hair. This guide outlines practical starting points for salon professionals ordering from Sach & Vogue Hair. Exact requirements vary by hair density, length goal, and method — use these ranges as a baseline and adjust with our team when needed.
Why weight matters
Too little hair produces a flat result; too much adds tension on the natural hair and can shorten wear time. Matching weight to density is especially important for keratin tip and sew-in weft work where load is concentrated on small sections.
General ranges by install type
- Partial volume (temples & crown) — often 50–80 g depending on method and desired lift.
- Medium full-head — commonly 100–150 g for average density, adjusted up for coarse hair.
- Full transformation — frequently 150–200+ g when adding significant length and density; fine hair may need a staged install.
- Clip-In sets — typically 80–120 g total across pieces for a complete set, cut to suit the client's layers.
Method-specific notes
Tape-In Hair Extensions
Weight is distributed across multiple wefts. Stylists often work in packs; we can advise pack counts based on row plans and target grams.
Keratin Tip Hair Extensions
Strand counts translate to grams. Fine hair usually needs fewer strands placed with wider spacing to avoid overload at the bond points.
Weft Hair Extensions
Row count and weft width determine total weight. Hand-tied wefts carry less bulk per centimetre than machine wefts — factor this into density planning.
Women Topper
Topper base size and hair length drive weight more than a standard weft install. Prioritise perimeter blend and parting coverage over maximum grams.
Ordering with confidence
When placing an order, share your client's natural density, current length, target length, and chosen method. Our production team will suggest an appropriate weight or pack configuration before manufacturing begins.
